Naples, Pompeii and Herculaneum: archeology and dolce vita
6 days
About this Tour
Day 1: Arrival at the airport and meet the guide
Private transfer to Naples, we settle into the hotel and then first walk in the vibrant and energetic city. Welcome dinner in a typical Neapolitan pizzeria.
Day 2: Discovering Naples, the heart of the Mediterranean
The starting point for our visit to Campania can only be the National Archaeological Museum of Naples, in the pulsating center of the city. Opened at the beginning of the 19th century, the museum represents one of the most important museums in the world for its kind. Here we could have a 360° view of the history and archeology of Campania. After completing the visit, we head to the exit to be able to taste the typical Neapolitan food in the suggestive Via dei Tribunali, the major decumanus that constitutes the heart of the ancient center of Naples. From here, crossing the narrow streets that have made the landscapes of the city famous in the world, we reach the Chapels of San Severo where the masterpiece of Sammartino is kept: the Veiled Christ. We finish the visit inside the historic center by immersing ourselves inside the tunnels of Naples Underground. Here we will have the opportunity to “feel first-hand” the complex stratigraphy of the city and its subsoil, first used by the Greek colonists as tuff quarries, by the Romans as aqueducts and as air raid shelters during the Second World War. After the last visit, we will have some free time to explore the alleys of the
historic center of Naples, perhaps stopping for an aperitif before dinner. For dinner, we will instead move inside the famous Spanish Quarters, the living and pulsing heart of the entire city. BB
Day 3: Herculaneum and the Vesuvius National Park
After breakfast we head towards Ercolano, where we will have the opportunity to visit a city completely “frozen” in time, thanks to its 16 meters of volcanic ash that covered it during the eruption of 79 AD. Houses, shops, temples and even food and jewelry have arrived intact to us. After lunch we climb towards the Vesuvius National Park where, with a short walk, we could reach the top of the volcano to see up close the crater that originated the historic eruption. From here we will have an exceptional view of the entire Gulf of Naples. Return to Pompeii, dinner and overnight stay in Pompeii.
Day 4: Pompeii, chronicle of a tragedy
Today is entirely focused on the visit of Pompeii, one of the most fascinating and complete archaeological sites in the world. “Saved” from time thanks to the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD, the visit to the site will allow us to go back in time and explore a completely preserved imperial Roman city, with its temples, theaters and myriad of richly frescoed dwellings. Today’s visit will take up most of the day, so we will bring something to eat in the numerous equipped areas of the archaeological park. Dinner and overnight stay in Pompeii.
Day 5: The Capital of Pasta and the Roman Villas in the Sorrento Peninsula
Today is completely dedicated to discovering the food and wine of the area. We head towards the Sorrento Peninsula, stopping in Gragnano, the European Capital of Pasta. We visit one of the many historic pasta factories in the city, a tradition that has been active here since at least the 16th century. Here we will see the process of creating this pasta, from the beginning to drying. At the end of the visit we taste the same pasta produced here in one of the restaurants in the city. After lunch we will head to a local winery to also taste the wines of the Gragnano area, renowned since ancient times. We continue towards Castellammare di Stabia, visit Villa Arianna, an archaeological area of about 2500 square meters and renamed for the large painting found on one of the walls of the villa. Here too we will have the opportunity to immerse ourselves in a context that was preserved from the eruption of 79 AD and that allows us today to visit one of the sumptuous villas that could be found on the Sorrento Peninsula, a sunny holiday destination in the past as well as today. After visiting the villas we will return to Castellamare, a lively seaside resort, where a fish-based dinner awaits us just steps away from the seaside village. Overnight stay in Castellamare.
